Non habemus...

Source: ABC
The Conclave has started and the first smoke on the evening on the first night has gone up.  Unsurprisingly, it was black, so no Pope yet - keep praying!

The first day...

According to Vatican Radio, the weather was less than favourable (dark and heavy clouds, and rain), but that didn't stop the camp out of hundreds waiting to watch the colour of the smoke from the specially attached Vatican chimney to see if it turned white to announce the election of a new Pope.

Yesterday the Cardinals moved into their lodgings for the Conclave,  heard the 'pro eligendo Mass', swore their oaths of secrecy for the proceedings, and heard a meditation.  They then undertook the first vote.

Smoke alarm...

Today there are four votes scheduled - so the first possible time for a smoke sighting is around 8pm this evening Australian Eastern Summer Time.

More likely though, we'll have to wait a few hours beyond that for the second morning ballot to be conducted, and again for the evening burning of the two afternoon votes.

But if you are hanging out to watch that first papal blessing live, you can always sign up to the ACBC's Papal Smoke Alarm.  Once the smoke goes up, you should have around 40 minutes to get to a tv to hear that first blessing...
