World Youth Day Indulgences

And now for some good news (h/t to Rorate Caeli)! The Pope has approved the following indulgences for the event:

"The Plenary Indulgence is granted to the faithful who will devotedly participate at some sacred function or pious exercise taking place during the "Twenty-third World Youth Day", including its solemn conclusion, so that, having received the Sacrament of Reconciliation and being truly repentant, they receive Holy Communion and devoutly pray according to the intentions of His Holiness.

The Partial Indulgence is granted to the faithful, wherever they are during the above-mentioned meeting, if, at least with a contrite spirit, they will raise their prayer to God the Holy Spirit, so that young people are drawn to charity and given the strength to proclaim the Gospel with their life."

And going with the theme of entrepreneurialism that is apparently popular with our bishops, the Sydney Morning Herald has a story about Cardinal Pell launching the first merchandising tent for WYD.... "There's nothing immoral about a little commercialism," he said.
He is right, it is absolutely traditional, as the medieval pilgrim's pewter badge pictured above, from Compostella, attests (you can a look at a possible collection based on fifteenth century Margery Kempe's travels here)!

So as you collect your indulgence, how about purchasing the 'WYDGET', a leather wristband with collectable jewellery-style tokens containing religious iconography, the "I love Jesus" T-shirt, a Receive The Power CD set, stainless-steel dog tags, sticker packs, WYD hoodie, didgeridoo or clip-on koalas or whatever....
