The first Church?



These are pictures from the site of what may be the first Catholic Church - dating back to between 33 and 70 AD in present-day Jordan. It lies under St. Georgeous church, which is believed to have been built in 230 A.D, and has a mosaic inscription referring to the '70 beloved by God and the divine. If the claim can be verified, it is certainly a very exciting discovery.


The archeologists who found the cave in which the Church is located claim to '...have evidence to believe this church sheltered the early Christians - the 70 disciples of Jesus Christ.'

Archaeologist Abdel-Qader Hussein described a circular worship area with stone seats separated from a living area that had a long tunnel leading to a source of water and said the early Christians hid there from persecution. You can read more about it here:
